Notebook

My creative journey began back in 1991 when I left my home of South Florida to finish up college at UCF in Orlando. Leading up to this, I spent a couple years interning at a local Rock Station outside of Fort Lauderdale (103.5 WSHE-FM). She's only Rock and RollThis is where I began my early radio years doing just about anything they’d let me do (getting dj’s coffee, board-op’ing, driving the station van and setting up sound equipment for promotions). If you live in South Florida and remember this station, you may recall the beginnings of a what is now a popular morning show team – ‘Paul and Young Ron’.

At this point in my life I was convinced, “This is the job for me”! Well, that initial vision led me to Orlando to not only finish college, but hopefully become a ‘Rock Star DJ’ at one of WSHE’s sister stations in Central Florida (WHTQ-FM “Q96″). Almost immediately after arriving in Orlando I pursued an internship with Q96 and rapidly became part of the crew. It’s amazing how popular you are when you work for free and actually show up when needed. Low and behold, a year later my hard work paid off (not literally of course). I began working overnights on the air and spent the next couple years working every undesirable late night air shift you can think of , while in the background I was gravitating to my real desire…’Audio Production’. This is where my creativity started thriving.

Over the course of the next few years, I ended up leaving Q-96 to work at one of Orlando’s hottest radio stations WDIZ-FM. I worked with some of the most creative and fun-loving people I had ever encountered (including the now popular “Larry the Cable Guy“; he was part of the morning show at the time believe it or not…Get R’ Done!).

The DIZ Van

Another gig On-the-Air living the ‘Rock Star Life’ and spending my off hours at every bar in Orlando being treated like royalty (nothing like free bar tabs wherever you go). I continued crafting my audio style painting pictures with sound which ended up becoming a big part of what was soon to became…”Alternative Rock Radio Imaging” (ya know, the loud explosive in your face promos you hear on every rock station in america). I loved it! It was a total form of creative expression. As my interest in being on the air rapidly dwindled, I continued experimenting further and began pumping out some very unique sounding work as the station’s Creative Services Director. In the commercial radio business, you MUST have a cool production presence otherwise you’re just another station playing the same 40 songs (thank god for satellite radio!!!).

WRIF LOGOFrom there, I bid the station adieu to follow my dreams in the Motor City where a big job offer awaited.
I accepted the Production Director position at one of the nation’s top Rock Stations…WRIF “The RIFF“. A station revered by Detroit locals everywhere because of 2 words…”Drew and Mike”. These guys are what radio is all about. A simple station promotion appearance would produce lines of 3,000 people just to shake these guys hands…now that’s love. I couldn’t believe it, at 24 years old I was working in the 12th largest radio market making good money (for a change) and seeing what radio life was like at the top of the food chain. It was indeed an experience meeting every famous artist you can think of and being held in such high regard to anyone you meet just because you work at “The RIFF”. So, I continued developing my creative talents, working my ass off and trying to outdo what other producers were creating across the nation (it’s a big competition when you’re in the high brow markets). But, after 2 years of insane deadlines and oh yeh…9 MONTHS OF WINTER…I had it, no more. Thanks for the memories Detroit!

From there I sought work elsewhere which ended up being a small rock station in Memphis, Tennessee (WMFS-FM). It wasn’t a shining moment in my life by any stretch of the imagination (we’re talking Memphis here), but I did manage to entertain myself in the production room writing, voicing and producing some creative stuff. My next step was taking night classes at a tech school in memphis (no NOT DeVry) in which I dove feet first into the land of IT learning design, programming and more importantly ‘how the internet works’. 6 months later, I received my CIW (certified internet webmaster certification) which meant I actually had a chance to escape what was quickly becoming the
‘Global Regime of Clear Channel Radio’ (a.k.a. Cheap Channel).

Pressure LogoWhile I was making this tireless transition setting my sites on a new and exciting job in web design (lol), I began working on a production package that I could market to radio station producers called ‘Pressure’! It was basically a single disc that contained hundreds of those crazy blop, bing, bang type of effects that you still hear today on Rock stations everywhere. Confused? To your left are the 2 Demos I produced and mailed out to hundreds of stations. I also designed my own site for it under the name BC Productions.

Once the PRESSURE craze ended and stations everywhere we’re using it (legally and illegally of course), I had already begun my newest career as a shiny new web designer. I went from the Rock-and-Roll business to a land of endless cubicles working for International Paper as an Intranet web designer. I’m really glad I got to experience this before the movie ‘Office Space’ came out because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to relate to the boring and VERY drab environment of corporate america (it’s a paper company for god’s sake, what do you expect). Regardless, after spending nearly a decade in Radio (which is long enough to drive anyone completely batty) the change was welcomed and I was getting some great experience in a new creative field. Even though I was let go due to company-wide downsizing (If there was a red stapler anywhere in site I would have stolen that bad boy! LOL)

Phase 2 (?..) Phase 3 PROFIT! Sorry, that doesn’t mean anything unless you’re a South Park fan. Next..

The years following, I did some more moving and ended up leaving Memphis to re-experience life in good ole’ Florida. Over the course of the next couple years, I was self-employed trying to make it as a freelance radio producer and designer. That only lasted so long before I went bonkers being alone all the time and almost went broke doing it (okay, I did go broke but that’s neither here nor there). No one said the creative business is easy.

I then set my sites on a full-time gig that could give me sanity and stability. I was pleasantly surprised to get a bite from one of the most prestigious film and recording schools in the whole frekin’ world … Full Sail Real World Education. If you’re a fellow MAC geek, you would die walking through this place. So here I was feeling like I was on top of the world. I was for the most part, but I was teaching a lecturing course called ‘Multimedia Audio’ to a class of over 130 students. No matter how big the honor was to work at this amazing place, I just couldn’t see myself staring at that many faces everyday discussing audio theory and how it related to media. I was itching to take my design and audio production abilities to the next step….VIDEO. Bye Bye Full Sail Orlando, Hello South Florida…for good.

Now, with all my skills I gravitated towards the field of video learning to shoot, writing storyboards, planning shoots and putting it all together. For several years, I worked for a small production company in Boca Raton which became an excellent platform for me to flourish and cut my teeth on some fairly high profile client projects. The stress was out of control, but the experience made it well worth it.

Present day, I work for a Cruise Line marketing company called The PPI Group based in Ft. Lauderdale. I serve as Director of Broadcast Operations and manage a talented and creative outfit of producers who are not only amazing at what they do, but a pleasure to work with.

I save the best for last as I reveal the most important thing in my life, my family. My wonderful wife Mary and our daughter Grace who make my life complete in every way.
